The Falcon has been a staple at the ACBS-Toronto Vintage Boat Show since 2006. We purchased her from Ian Douglas of Lake Rosseau in 2005. Ian was very proud of his boat and was a regular at the local golf course where he commuted in Falcon regularly. I have restored Falcon a number of times. Originally with Eric Seepa for transom integrity and freshening up and recently with Rich and Linda Hughes for a face lift and special attention detailing. During the last restoration I was encouraged by Rich to detail the engine and I built my own stainless steel mirror polished exhaust manifolds. Rich’s attention to detail is incredible presented in Falcon’s current dockside appeal.
True to its model Falcon is a real “gentlemen’s” racer. Orginally commissioned to be built in the late 50’s she was launched in 1960. The orginal owner, Harry Umphrey wanted to build a smaller racer similar to Shadow or Black Knight that were designed by John Hacker who was a famous boat designer in the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s. in 1958/59 Mr Umphrey travelled to Detroit and found John who was in his 80’s at the time and John drafted the lines of Falcon. Mr Umphrey then had the hull built by the foreman, George Hinterhoeller, of Shepherd Boatworks and then he finished the decks and interior on his own. The purchase of the boat came with a pleasant surprise of a copy of the original blueprint signed by John Hacker.
Falcon has travelled the roadways to a number of Boat Shows and events including the ACBS show in Gravenhurst, won the Best of Show at the Baysville Boat and Car Show Festival, and earned Silver Status Award at the 2019 ACBS International AGM and Boat Show after losing 10 points for not having the original engine.
But the best award is the genuine interest and joy that our kids have in Falcon and their desire to take their friends for rides. Needless to say – there are a number of sightings of Falcon on Gloucester Pool on a regular basis.
