From the Owner

Mainstay is a 1956 Matthews Martinique Express Cruiser equipped with her original twin Chrysler M-45-S 200hp marine Hemi’s and original Onan “on demand” auto start 3000kw Onan generator. She is one of two of this model left in the world and the only one of the two that came out of the Matthews factory with the soft top option and that still has her original engines.

“Drina” was originally ordered by H. C. “Bob” Ford (who was the director of the Commonwealth Bank of Michigan) from Gregory Boats in Detroit, MI in the fall of 1955 and delivered in the spring of 1956.

Mr. Ford kept “Drina” moored at Grosse Point Club until he sold her after 3 years of ownership. Passing through a succession of owners “Drina” now called “Unicorn” and owned by the Hoyt family of Toledo, OH was sold to Randy Hart of New Waterford, OH in 1999.

Randy commissioned major repairs and restoration of the vessel (which he named Mainstay) and operated it until the spring of 2015 when he sold it to me.

Mainstay has undergone continuous work under my care and was operated on the Detroit River until the fall of 2017 when she was stored while undergoing further restoration at Acali Place Marina in La Salle.

She is expected to be back on the water in 2022.

I love that you included the letter from the original owner. It’s obvious how much he appreciated all you’ve done to care for this boat. We’re going to “Feature” your boat in our e-newsletter Classicboat Connection in case people missed it when they were visiting the boat show website. Thank you for sharing her story with us.
